Sculptures

Intense work in the foundry fueled the search for expression in new three dimensional forms. The addition of bronze sclupture to the extensive catalog of paintings, adds a unique chapter in Maddrey's career. Take in the sculptures and if you're interested in seeing how the bronze process works

A fairy tale sculpture of the Frog King summoning his supporters before a great feast. His sumptous cape, lined with rabbit fur hangs off his back while his golden medalion shines brightly around his neck.

This chilli pepper is an enlarged replica of a pepper I had drying up on my mantel for a few months. The challenge was to do an exact likeness of all the angles and indentions. Nature is always the best starting point for any creative endeavor.

Believe it or not, this piece started out being a pair of chuck taylors. I'm not sure at what time in the creation process that the shoes turned into an elephant head, but they did and that's the beauty of art.

Apple Core #2. Another piece inspired by the processes of nature.

For this piece I was trying to convey a connection between two individuals. It's challenging to approach a subject that has been done throughout the ages. For this couple, I was trying to capture the excitement of new love. Only young lovers hug this way. Old married couples don't jump on each other anymore.

I had created this lighter in wax many months ago. It was just sitting around, collecting dust and being uninspired. Eventually I just broke it in half because I knew I was never going to cast it in bronze. Once I did finally destroy it, this new idea came to me and I went for it. I wanted to capture that exact moment when all the action pent up in the lighter is being released in one huge explosion.
The following bronze plates were inspired by the beauty of Yosemite. Each is roughly 11" x 8" and like all bronze, very heavy.

The Sankofa bird is symbol of African origins. It puts into physical form the idea of taking one step forward to the future, while looking back into the past.

Sometimes in life we are not always where we want to be. Sometimes life isn't always happiness and joy. This represents that feeling.

This piece was refers to the game of 'rock, paper scissors.' I wanted to sculpt some hands that showed some expression. Everyone knows this game and can relate to it, either as the winner or the loser. I felt that this game doesn't get the respect it deserves anymore, so I wanted to make this piece. (not yet cast in bronze)
