This series of works all focus on the tension between the sky and the ocean. The horizon line is the meeting point - 3 an imaginary intersection of two planes, the sky and the ocean. It’s about that moment at varying times of day. Every minute the scene changes. Every minute the light changes, the ocean changes, the air moves, but the line is a constant. The waves can be crashing into shore, but the line is always a perfectly straight line. Of course that’s an illusion in itself since the world is spherical, but painting is an illusion too so my subject suits its medium.
This series forces me to pay close attention to subtle differences. It’s similar to meditation in that I have to keep my mind focused. This subject makes me notice the small things in the world around me. Every minute the light changes, the color changes, the temperature changes, the people on the beach are changing, the clouds move, the sun moves, but I’m still standing where I have been for hours. That’s the beauty of it. It’s like the world is a river around me and I’m just a rock at the bottom watching it, feeling it move around me. While I'm still the same just standing in the same spot for hours at a time only seeing and being while everything else is moving and doing.
