The initial catalyst for these works of art was an amazing amount of free time.. Out in my backyard I had over a dozen sculptures scattered across the river. As word spread a little gallery for those in the know was formed.

What is interesting about these works is the dialogue they produced. I heard comments from every part of the spectrum. Some viewers thought they were beautiful, others thought they were just some sticks laying around. Some people were of the opinion that nature doesn't need any fixing and that the works were mere graffiti in the woods. Depending on how you view graffiti, that can be taken as a compliment.

I was also impressed with the way that other people started building their own sculptures. Everyone likes to be creative. For some it's difficult because of the expectations. When you're using sticks and rocks as the medium there is less intimidation then when you're sitting in front a blank canvas. As with any art, it was interesting to see people's personalities come through. Just using basic materials, you can really see how each individual thinks. You can see their impatience, their style, their quirks and many other aspects of their personality coming through. Even if it's just a pile of rocks

As in painting, it's the process that is important. The works themselves are secondary. The objects used are less important then the vibe they lay down. It's all about the feeling one has when he enters a grove with a trail of sticks wrapped around all the trees. It's the feeling of suprise somone has when they stumble upon a work out in the middle of the desert. It's the reaction of the people when they interact with the works. For some of the more precariously stacked rocks, I've seen people actually whisper when they walk up to it. As if loud voices would distrub the balance.

Many of these works are merely temporary. Outside of my memory, the photograph is really the only proof of thier existince. Since it's mostly based off the forces of nature, it seems appropriate that nature would be the one to dispose of them.
